Some additions:

Braces aka Suspenders: In Silk or Wool, with the leather attachers. Great look for a great chest.

Grosgrain Watchbands: Interchangeable watchbands add some flair. Says style, instead of tool like an expensive watch.

Wool/Cashmere Ties: Great look in the winter.

Personally, high style seems counterproductive on an unshapely body. It's like the plain jane who wears a dazzling sun dress - she's over reaching.

Unless you've got panache. Enter panache, exit etiquette.

Al,

Good point. There are many poorly dressed, financially successful people.

Technology changed that.

"regularly interacted with Bill Gates, and was by all means a successful dominant Alpha Male"

The real question is did he swoop fly girls.

Possibly, since he was pretty "out there".

It sound liked he worked pretty damn hard on being "different".

Its easier for me to just dress sharper than broken glass.

"They said one has more self-respect that way and it comes across on the phone."

They were right.

Conrad Dixon,

Thanks for the comment.

This was just some "quick reference" tips.

Far from a definitive "Manifesto" on the subject.

Check out this on watches:

In the second line, it's supposed to say "prevent" not "present".

While I agree with most everything stated here, I must constantly play the devil's advocate to present myself from being too set in any particular way.

As a case study to this objection I present the father of a friend of mine Bill Hill.

Bill was until recently, an executive at Microsoft. He owned a beautiful house in rural Washington (About three miles from the 4th of July party, Admin), a mansion on the beach in Kaui, Hawaii (which i have had the pleasure of staying in), routinely spoke in front of multiple thousands of people at conferences, regularly interacted with Bill Gates, and was by all means a successful dominant Alpha Male. I forget his official title, but he was a Marketting director of some kind. He invented a program called Cleartype, which is apparently in use in the text you and i are reading right now.

Bill is also a born and raised Scotsman. To my knowledge he did not own a suit, has long hair and a full beard, showed up to work in khakis, and never missed a press conference without donning his full kilt, and bare chest complete with blue Braveheart war paint. The press always loved it.

Bill has rubbed shoulders with George W. Bush, Al Gore, and Gorbachev. And he does not wear suits.

I, however, wouldn't likely trade any of my Armani and Prada for that flavor of success.

And in rebuttal to the shoes, i prefer a good pair of solid, well made, but highly polished boots. Its alpha style, with a more masculine touch.

I also have no shame in wearing a chain wallet with my suit.

"Sadly, for most of America being as slovenly as possible seems to be a lifetime goal."

In a lot of German offices without direct customer contact the guys are wearing, for example, Birkenstocks and shorts. Of course, a bank backoffice will be more formal, but among techies that is not unusual.

I worked in London in telephone sales for a while. No direct customer contact either, but formal clothes were a prerequisite. They said one has more self-respect that way and it comes across on the phone.

Another thing that needs to be added to the list is accessories... watches, necklaces, rings, piercings etc. Definitely adds to the effect.

Peace,
