Armed and Dangerous: Warrior gene linked to violent behavior

Dominant men are prone to violence and aggression. There are doubtless many biological bases for this, including testosterone and nitric oxide levels. Research may have found another however, a genetic variant of a gene named MAOA, aka the “Warrior Gene” (hat tip to blogger Male Chauvinist Woman at Female Misogynist).

Man or Mouse

A study on mice found that inhibition of nitric oxide, a neurotransmitter, led to increased aggression, often fatal between males.  Another effect was persistent sexual advances even where females were not receptive.  It seems that both of these behaviors are linked: Johns Hopkins University scientists have discovered a genetic basis for violent and excessive sexual [...]

A Little Fear is a Good Thing

I can smell your fear, we all can.  Human pheromones emitted during stress and fear can actually increase the mental acuity of those perceiving them.  This, like caffeine, puts us in a heightened state of arousal and alertness.  This has dual potential outcomes, because we know from experience that the ones experiencing the fear, while [...]

Genghis Khan, The Super-Y & Ego-Resiliency

Recently I watched the movie Mongol about the life of Genghis Khan before his rise to power.  Genghis Khan holds great interest for me not only because he conquered the known world in 25 years, but also because he had a Super-Y. This post is addressed to Mothers.  The premise is a simple one, why do you raise your sons to be Beta males or “Nice Guys” when this is counter to the principles they need to successfully date and reproduce?  It seems women are nearly universally in denial about what causes attraction in them.  If you [...]

Love’s whipping boy

Watch out gents!  Research has shown that falling in love reduces your testosterone while raising that of your woman.  It’s long been thought that a man in love loses his masculinity and subjugates himself to the object of his affection, thus the cliché of being pussy-whipped.  Now we see that this isn’t merely anecdotal, but [...]

Humans have Pheromones too: Part II ~ Male Pheromones

Read Part I of this series here. Research on human pheromones is demonstrating that our species is far more involved in chemical communication than we formerly thought.  Until recently, the state of our understanding was that they were undetectable, that we had lost the ability to recognize them, and that they had been lost to [...]
